Expired Tags: Does My Insurance Still Work?
Two separate systems that point one way
Your policy is a contract with an insurer. Your registration is a DMV record. They meet in one direction: insurers report coverage to the DMV electronically, and a registered vehicle with no insurance on record has its registration suspended. The reverse link doesn't exist in the same way. An expired registration doesn't, by itself, cancel an insurance policy. Read your policy's conditions anyway, because the wording varies by insurance company.
What the law says about driving it
Vehicle Code 4000 says you may not drive, move or leave standing an unregistered vehicle on a highway, or in a public parking facility, unless the registration is current and the fees are paid. A few points from the section are worth knowing:
- From July 1, 2024 through January 1, 2030, an expired registration can't be the sole reason for enforcement before the second month after the month it expired. If you're stopped for something else, you can be cited for it sooner.
- The rule doesn't apply to a vehicle stored in a private parking facility by, or with the express permission of, the facility's owner.
- An expired registration found at a stop is often handled with a notice to correct: renew it and deliver proof.
Where the real risks are
- Why it expired. A registration held up by a failed smog check or unpaid fees is a paperwork problem. A registration suspended for no insurance on record is a coverage problem, and the fix starts with the policy.
- At claim time. If you crash with expired tags, your policy commonly still responds if it was in force, but driving an unregistered car is still a violation, and the other side's insurer may raise it.
- Cancelling insurance because the car "isn't legal anyway." That is backwards. Dropping coverage on a registered car invites a suspension and leaves you exposed if it's driven.
What to do
- Renew online or at the DMV; if smog is the hold-up, get the smog check done first.
- If the car won't be driven, towed, stored or parked on public roads for the whole registration year, consider planned non-operation, which can be filed up to 60 days before or 90 days after the registration expires.
- Keep the policy in force until the car is either renewed or properly off the road.

Does an expired registration void my insurance?
Not by itself, in the usual case. Coverage commonly depends on the policy being in force and paid, but conditions vary by insurance company, so read yours.
Can I be ticketed the day my registration expires?
From July 1, 2024 through January 1, 2030, an expired registration alone can't be the sole basis for enforcement before the second month after it expired; another violation changes that.
Can I leave an unregistered car parked on the street?
No. Vehicle Code 4000 also bars leaving an unregistered vehicle standing on a highway or in a public parking facility.
